Personalize your big day with Save the dates

Save the date cards were once reserved for destination weddings and out of town guests, but in recent years they have become a wedding essential. For those of you who are not familiar, a save the date is a notification of your wedding date that is sent to your wedding guests. While many weddings take over a year to plan, a save the date is a great way to let all of your friends and loved ones know that you have set a date to make the biggest commitment of your life while also setting the tone for your wedding. Your guest will also appreciate the advance notice of the big day so they can make airline reservations, lose some weight, find a date, find a babysitter or make any other preparations that need to be taken care of prior to the wedding date.

The great thing about save the dates is that, unlike the invitations, there are not as many rules of etiquette regarding save the dates. They can be sent out as early as a year before the wedding or up to three months before the wedding. Your save the dates can be as formal as an engraved card or as informal as an email. Some common choices for most couples is a save the date magnet, or a save the date sticker. Both of which are very simple and inexpensive. Some brides choose a personalized candy bar wrapper or a cookie or some other type of treat to send to their guests. These are great options with endless possibilities for the bride to show her creativity.

One recent trend is that many couples are incorporating their engagement photos into their save the date notices. Not only is taking an engagement photo is a great way to give your wedding photographer a trial run to see how well you work together but it also gives you an instant design for your save the dates. You can use this photo on magnets, stickers, cards, candy bar wrappers or almost any of the options available for save the dates. Your photographer might even be able to create a photo save the date card, similar to photo holiday cards that you can send to your guests.

Couples have a lot of freedom in the design of save the dates and the possibilities truly are endless. Whether creating your own save the dates or ordering them from a stationary company or your photographer, you can really express your personality as a couple and set the tone for your wedding.

Wedding flowers: Tips from Amanda Haggquist

Tips from a florist -

A wedding is one of the few times in your life to express yourself with decor. Flowers are the most common decor for a wedding and are thought of as the most costly, however this will give you some great ideas to have the extravagant wedding of your dreams without having to spend your honeymoon in the poor house.

1. Using seasonal flowers are one of the best ways to save a couple dollars. I know that peonies are your favorite flower, but if your wedding is not in May or June, you may want to rethink your favorite flower. Think of what it is about the flower that you love and figure out a substitution. Peonies have ruffly petals, like lisianthus. A couple clustered lisianthus can give the same impression as a peony, and the colors are almost identical.

2. You want a large centerpiece, but dont want to spend an arm and a leg. If you want a large centerpiece, think of large flowers, such as hydrangea and lilies. Roses do not cover as much surface area as say a gerbera daisy.

3. In my opinion, color scheme is key to any decor. You generally have white or ivory, the color of your bridesmaids dresses, and perhaps a metallic color as an accent. In picking bouquets for your bridesmaids, choose colors that are opposite of what they are wearing. Although, some colors can be tough to compliment. For example, it is a September wedding and the bride is wearing ivory with gold accents and the bridesmaids are wearing burgundy with gold accents. If the bridesmaids were to carry red or burgundy flowers, they would disappear against the dress, throwing all your money away. A great color to compliment burgundy is blush to deep pink, royal purple, golden apricot, and even some shades of green.

4. Carnations are not the enemy. Growers have come a long way with carnations. There are always new colors and colors that can be hard to find. They come in almost every color- and I mean every color, except blue. There is now naturally green carnations (a minty lime green), burgundy, purple, lavendar, and many bi-colors. Sometimes in order to get a fuller look, don’t shy away from carnations. They are so affordable, long lasting, and mildly fragrant.

5. Roses are the most commonly used wedding flower. They do come in a variety of colors and are available all year. However they have become so common place in weddings that some brides shy away from them to be more unique. There are many other flowers that show your uniqueness such as callas, lilies, gerbera daisies, and so many more. Talk to your florist about what is available around your wedding date.

Best Wishes with all your planning! I hope this is a magical time for you and you soak up every aspect!
